The Navagraha: how nine energies shape a life

6 min read

In Vedic thought the nine grahas are not simply planets in the sky. They are living energies, each responsible for a particular department of experience: Surya for vitality and authority, Chandra for the mind, Mangal for courage, Budh for intellect and speech, Guru for wisdom and growth, Shukra for love and comfort, Shani for discipline and karma, and Rahu and Ketu for the shadows that pull us forward and inward.

When a graha is strong, its department runs smoothly and almost invisibly. When it is weak, debilitated, combust or badly placed, that same department begins to demand attention. A weak Chandra rarely announces itself as an astrological problem; it shows up as broken sleep and a restless mind. An afflicted Shani does not feel cosmic; it feels like delay after delay.

A grah shanti is the traditional response. It is not a transaction with the sky, but a way of consciously turning towards the energy that is out of balance, offering it attention, mantra and fire, and asking it to soften. The mantra count, the samagri, the metal, the grain and even the day of the week are all matched to the graha in question.

If you are unsure which graha needs attention, look at where life keeps repeating the same lesson. That repetition is usually the clearest chart reading available to you.
