Sankalp and gotra: why your details matter

4 min read

Sankalp is the moment the pandit states, out loud, who the ritual is for. Your name, your gotra, your birth details and your intention are recited before a single offering is made.

Gotra traces lineage back to a rishi. It places you within a line of ancestry rather than treating you as an isolated individual. If your gotra is unknown, tradition allows the Kashyap gotra to be used, and the ritual is complete.

This is also why physical presence is not required. The vidhi is bound to you by sankalp, not by proximity. Devotees have relied on this for centuries, sending offerings and intentions to distant temples through priests.

You will still see everything: a live link during the ritual, a recording afterwards, photographs of the vidhi, and prasad that arrives at your door.
